The Swiss Women’s Congress 1996 demanded that immigrant women suffering violence should not be faced with deportation from Switzerland in the case of a divorce or separation. This is in agreement with the demands passed by the UNO World Conference for Women in Beijing in 1995.

Based on the General Declaration of Human Rights and various UNO conventions, in the year 2000 the demand arose for a comprehensive protection programme for women affected by trafficking to be created.
Switzerland has ratified numerous international agreements that play an important role in the fight against trafficking in people: the European Convention on Human Rights, the International Pact on Civil and Political Rights, the International Pact on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the Agreement on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, the ILO Convention on Forced Labour, the Convention on Children’s Rights, the Convention on Slavery and the Augmentary Agreement  on the Abolition of Slavery, the Slave Trade and Slave-like Institutions or Practices.
In addition, Switzerland is participating in the negotiations for the two protocols on the International Convention of the United Nations against Transnational, Organised Crime in Connection with Trafficking of Migrants and People.
