Nowadays the majority of the trafficked persons coming to the Netherlands seems to be from Central and Eastern Europe. A smaller
number are coming from Latin America, Asia and Africa, although the amount of trafficked people from the last two is increasing.
The exact number of people who are trafficked in the Netherlands each year is unknown, since not all the victims step forward
for assistance or registration. The latest reliable numbers are found in the annual reports of the Dutch National Reporter
on Trafficking in Human beings. The third report (2004) mentions numbers from the periods of 1998 until 2002. The officially
registered cases in the years 1998-2001 were about 130 per year. In 2002 this number sharply increased to 201. It is expected
that many more people are victims of trafficking, but are not registered since they are never found by neither the police
nor the social workers or because they decided not to press charges against their trafficker.
