The dawn of the twenty-first century brought with it high hopes for a world of greater love, justice and peace among nations
and between men and women everywhere. Those expectations were based on signs of better and more frequent communication across
international borders, such as the setting up of transnational organs for dialogue and cooperation among national, like the
United Nations Organisation, the Organisation of African Unity, the European Union, the Economic Community of West African
States, among many others. Over the second half of the twentieth century, the said organs did much to advance the cause of
peace, mutual understanding and cooperation among the nations of the world. Beyond that, the same organs made a number of
landmark pronouncements on the subject of human and peoples rights, such as the United Nations Declaration on Human and Peoples' Rights and the African Charter of Human Rights. Towards the close of the last century, a number of concrete steps were also taken at various levels to ensure universal
compliance with the principles enunciated in those declarations.
